![]() Being on the front lines as an advocate of yoga, spiritual healing, Reiki, and other now dubbed “alternative healing” practices has, over the years, left me open to harsh criticism by my seemingly more pragmatic and sensible friends and family. One reason for this is because people have a hard time with things they don’t see, and have no faith in what they feel…unless it is anger or hostility (that's for a later post). Another reason, I believe, has a lot to do with how some of my fellow Lightworkers represent themselves and the healing modalities they practice. Some of my spiritual peeps make me cringe, but then again, I realize that this feeling is born out of fear of the loss of “respectability” for my avocation. I get it. I’m a work in progress. After all, they are just being themselves with rainbows colored clothing, drums, crystals, chanting, dancing on the subway…geez I could go on! Though deep in my heart I am a flower child and my life mantra is “Love and Peace” I’ve learned to be careful in how I bring forth information about the healing arts. I manage to wrap the loving and guiding messages and information from the other dimensions in a manner that is not so…shall we say… “freaky-deaky” to my clients and fellow human beings. I am attempting to bring respectability to the healing arts without removing the Love and Peace. Let's Talk More About Reiki and Healing I’ve stopped hiding my knowledge and interest in the realm of spirituality. It is time now. Courage has been gained. Science is catching up to us lightworkers. More and more people are “getting it”, taking yoga classes, meditating, chanting, changing many life long, and sometime injurious, habits for a cleaner way of living. Having open discussions about Reiki, Acupuncture, The Reconnection, etc is better for the world at large. People are seeing the benefits of embracing these practices and they want to share their experiences. I'm a voracious reader and lover of learning. This practice has taught me so much about Reiki and other healing modalities. I've gain insight from reading that helps me speak to my clients in a way they understand. When I learn something I apply it if it is appropriate. My clients get a fresh new me who is learning and expanding in skill and intellect. Now, I talk about Reiki and healing all the time. Who are Your Healing Practice Advocates? If you are a Reiki Master or a practitioner of any healing art and you are not sharing your gift with as many people as you would like assess your presentation. Could you benefit from reining it in a little? How you present yourself speaks volumes about how you feel about your profession. I take my healing practice very seriously. I don’t see why I cannot blend a professional connection with a medical doctor's office with Reiki or The Reconnection. If fact this is exactly what I’ve done, and I will pat myself on the back for representing Reiki, The Reconnection, and other healing methods in a professional way. The doctors I work with are among my greatest supporters. What you see is only the tip of the iceberg of what you get! With me you get information that is indeed love-drenched and warm positivity delivered in a professional manner that will not assail your current reality while your attitudes get a gentle adjustment. I will encourage you in the decalcification of your pineal gland, shine a light for you on the many paths to enlightenment and ascension, and introduce you to your truly Divine Self. All this delivered in a way that only a fun-loving native Brooklyn, New Yorker could. I may leave my Om signs home and forego the flowers in my hair, but I’ll wear my Japa Malas, carry the Lapis Lazuli and burn the Nag Champa. After all, I’m a spiritual healer and a girl’s gotta represent! Loving you! Reiki uses the Universal Life Force Energies to produce positive healing results. According to John Hopkins Medical center: “Reiki is a very specific form of energy healing, in which hands are placed just off the body or lightly touching the body, as in “laying on of hands.” Reiki can also be done “long-distance”. In the last 20 years Reiki has grown in popularity. People all over the world are beginning to understand the many ways this powerful non-invasive healing modality can enhance their lives. Whether it is Dr. Mehmet Oz or Dr. Andrew Weil or the lady next door who uses Reiki on her pets, Reiki is firmly establishing itself in the modern culture as a viable healing practice. Origins of Reiki It is said that all the healing energies and frequencies have been on or around our planet from the beginning of time, but we first became aware of Reiki through the Dr. Mikao Usui during the 1920s. Mikao Usui received the vision of the Reiki symbols and their energy during his Buddhist training that consisted of 21 days of fasting and meditation on Mount Kurama-yam in Japan. It was during the earthquake of 1923 in Japan that Dr. Usui saw a tremendous need for Reiki healing in the people suffering around him. As he began to treat and heal people with the Reiki energies awareness and popularity of his healing method grew. Knowing that he alone could not treat the many suffering he began to share his knowledge by teaching a small group of people including Dr. Chujiro Hayashi. Dr. Hayashi met Mrs. Hawayo Takata who had been suffering from several life threatening illnesses. Mrs. Takata was so amazed by the successful healing results of her Reiki sessions that she petitioned Dr. Hayashi to teach her Reiki. Legend has it that during one her Reiki sessions Mrs. Takata became suspicious of the doctors treating her. Believing they were secretly holding an apparatus that produced this healing warmth she grabbed the doctor’s hand only to find nothing but the doctors hand warmed by the un-seeable Reiki energies. In 1937 Mrs. Takata brought Reiki to the shores of the US through Hawaii. In 1938, she became the first female Reiki Master and 13th initiate of Dr. Hayashi. Mrs. Takata taught Reiki until her death in the 1980. Reiki and Spirituality Reiki is not a religion nor does it promote any kind of religious dogma. The benefits of Reiki can be experienced by anyone regardless of whether or not they devoutly practice any religion. The Reiki is considered a spiritual modality one reason is because it can have a profound effect on one's spirit and emotional body. Reiki energy is experienced as a warm radiant glow throughout the client’s body. It produces a very calming effect and one often feels as though they are being held in a soft loving embrace. The healing results are individual. Each session is different as Reiki will addresses the spoken and unspoken needs of that particular client Reiki Philosophy As the Hippocratic Oath is practiced by Physicians, The Five Principles of Reiki are remembered and practiced by Reiki Practitioners all over the world. THE FIVE REIKI PRINCIPLE Just for today, I will not be angry. Just for today, I will not worry. Just for today, I will be grateful. Just for today, I will do my work honestly. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing. What to expect during a Reiki Session
Reiki is done on a massage table. The client is fully clothed and lies on her back. In Reiki there are specific hands positions used by every Reiki Practitioner. Reiki is first applied to the front of the body. You may feel the Reiki Practitioner’s hands as being very warm. When I’m working with clients I often receive messages or see pictures and I relay those to the client. I find these images/symbols are very helpful in the healing of emotional concerns that are often at the root cause of psychical ailment. At the end of the session you may feel dizzy or your mouth may feel very dry bring bottled water with you or ask for a glass of water. At this time I share my impressions with my client and recommendations to enhance the healing process. After your session Many of the effects you will experience right away. You will see more change in three days and even more as the energies integrate into your subtle energy body. The healings can be profound while the energies are beautifully subtle. I still post to the Facebook page, so please feel free to "like" it and check it out. I thought this post would give you insight as to who I am and how I came to be a healer. I titled it My Spiritual Raison D'etre. Enjoy! I am an intuitive and healer. It is an ability I have not always embraced with my full attention. I kept it secret most of my life because I was afraid of ridicule from those who thought it wasn't a rational pursuit or a legitimate way to make a living. I was raised by my mother, is a devout Jehovah's Witness, who pretty much thinks that anything in this realm is demonic. However, oddly enough, it was my mother who introduced me to astrology, a science that fascinated me at the age of 10! My beloved grandmother was the one who recognized my gifts, celebrated them, and even trained me to the best of her ability. This makes me smile because little did my mother know I was often called into my grandmother's dimly lit bedroom to tell her and my great aunt what I saw in the candle's light. I love those memories. Though, honestly, at the time I was pretty bored with the process...I was only six years old! By the way, I saw my first spirit when I was about three years old...more on that in another post. I stopped doing "wierd" stuff as a teenager to experience life. In my 20's I was being "called" again, and this time I voraciously read anything having to do with spirituality...even if I didn't understand it. In my 30's I accidentally came upon my ability to "read" people. I would offer to massage a friend's back and then I would tell them what I saw. I didn't think I was doing anything really significant. I was just having fun until one day a friend told me she was moving to Arizona with her husband, and that in our "session" I had accurately described everything she was going through. The image of a white bird, almost like a dove, flying over the Grand Canyon appeared to me. The bird had unusually long wings. My friend said "Emily you are more powerful than you realize." Mind you, I thought I was crazy for "seeing" the Grand Canyon. I thought it simply meant she was moving far away. I put an incorrect practical spin on it and asked her if she was going to Japan where her husband had once worked. The long white wings meant, in my spiritual vocabulary, the trip was a good one, and even though she'd be leaving her very close-knit family it was ultimately for the best. The Grand Canyon was a symbol born out of my own experience. My husband and I love the Grand Canyon, and have visited it many times. My friend's words stayed with me and I wondered if I could repeat this psychic experience. I did over, and over, and over again. Wow! This was cool. It made me happy, and my confidence grew. So, I continued to read, research, and experiment. I wanted to understand what I was doing, but I had no reliable, credible source to contact. At this time I was having some serious problems in my life and decided to contact a reputable psychic. I made an appointment with Char Margolis, the celebrated psychic medium. You know, John Edward's good buddy! Yep, I go straight to the top! Char told me that I am healer. I remember her emphatically stating this to me twice during my consultation. I wasn't ready to hear her. I was like "yeah, yeah, yeah...but this other thing...." When I think back on it I can only say: "What an ass I was!" lol I went on with my life armed with some vital Char information that helped me navigate through the insanity of my life at the time, but I was no closer to understanding my psychic gifts. One day I came across a television program where a Reiki Master was being interviewed. He talked about healing with his hands, and it all seemed quite familiar to me. So, I sought out a Reiki teacher. She was great and I learned a lot. However, when I told her I also saw images when I touched people she informed me that I had to decide whether I wanted to be psychic or a healer. Surely, she was doing the same thing I did when she told the guy on the table during a demonstration that he had pizza for lunch! Whatever! Psychic competition?...Maybe? My favorite memory is of a Reiki exchange with my friend Kelly Wilkes. I told her I saw a huge bright light, and a little dog waiting expectantly for her. I asked "Kelly are you planning to go home?" Kelly is from Baltimore. She said "no" but the following week Kelly did tell me that she was going home to Baltimore to be near her family. She also told me that she was going to study massage therapy. 10 years later, Kelly and her husband Rex are the owners of the Ojas Wellness Centers in Maryland. I am proudest of this reading because it was one of the many things that helped my friend pursue her life's purpose with confidence. My experiences in life have lead me to believe that there are so many more people in the world who are intuitive lightworkers longing for a compassionate listener, and a person who “gets them”. We all need someone to encourage us on our spiritual path. I believe we all mentor each other on a deep level. I would love to hear your stories or the lessons you’ve learned on your spiritual journey. I am in service to you and I hope my stories and insights will help you live your life to the fullest.
